Radiator vs A/C Condenser vs Intercooler: What Each Part Does

Radiators, condensers, and intercoolers can look similar because each uses tubes and fins to transfer heat. Their circuits, operating purpose, connections, and installation positions are different.

Radiator

The radiator removes heat from the engine coolant circuit. It normally uses larger coolant hose connections and may include plastic or aluminum tanks, drain provisions, mounting points, or transmission-oil cooling features depending on the application.

A/C condenser

The condenser rejects heat from high-pressure refrigerant in the air-conditioning circuit. Identification commonly depends on refrigerant line fittings, manifold layout, receiver-drier position, sensor ports, core dimensions, and vehicle application.

Intercooler

The intercooler reduces the temperature of compressed intake air on a turbocharged or supercharged engine. It uses charge-air connections and is matched by core construction, end-tank layout, connection size and position, and mounting arrangement.

Why names are not enough

A purchasing enquiry should state the part family as well as the OE number and vehicle. Photos and dimensions prevent confusion when several heat exchangers are installed close together at the front of the vehicle.
